Chris Tichborne Lecturer, Animation

Chris Tichborne

I am a Lecturer in Animation specialising in Stop-Motion. I have 26 years of experience in the stop-motion industry working in TV, feature films and commercials as an animator and director. I have been very involved in all stages of production, from the initial premises, scripts, storyboarding, animatic, studio direction, offline and all the way to the final grade and sound mix. These productions have given me a wealth of knowledge and experience that I am passionate to share with students.

After graduating with a BA (Hons) in Illustration, I initially started as a studio assistant/runner and afterwards as an animator on a variety of children’s television shows. The first feature film I worked on was Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, followed by Coraline and Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox. Throughout these large productions, I started to consider other aspects of animation that interested me and I started to focus on directing.

My teaching focusses on strong visual narrative, the physics of character animation and the importance of collaboration within this discipline. I also support Undergraduate and Postgraduate students throughout their animation filmmaking process, from concept to completion.

In 2011, I directed my first series Strange Hill High for CBBC. Since then, I have worked on various shows such as ClangersThe Tiny Chef Show and The Sound Collector. I have recently been Animation Supervisor on Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
