An award-winning writer and director with a long professional background in film and television, I am Programme Leader for Filmmaking at SODA.
My acclaimed short films have been shown at international film festivals, including Dinard, San Sebastian, Miami, London, Melbourne, Krakow and Brest. I received nominations for Best Newcomer at Soho Rushes Film Festival and for Best Short Film by BBC Talent. I was the recipient of a DNA Films/Script Factory First Draft Award and my television work as director includes, among others, No Angels for Channel 4 and the groundbreaking Clocking Off for BBC1, winner of a BAFTA and an RTS Best Drama Series Award.
This Is Not My House, a documentary portrait of my father, was winner of the prestigious 2014 Hot Shoe Photofusion Award. Winterlong, my debut feature as writer and director, premiered at the 2018 Edinburgh Film Festival and received a Nomination for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film. Winterlong was given a limited release in UK cinemas in 2019 through Miracle Distribution and is currently available to view on Amazon Prime.
In leading the Filmmaking programme at SODA, I champion different perspectives and filmmaking practices across fiction, documentary, and artists’ film and video. I also embrace art and design pedagogies which encourage students to take risks with their learning by doing: ‘One of my core values as a film educator is a belief that the merging of theory and practice is integral for film students to understand and experience their craft.”
My current research interests lie somewhere between film and photography and the politics of space.
